How do WWW-pages work?

The general concept of the WWW is that your computer retrieves a file via the network from another computer called host, where the page is stored, and displays it on your computer using a program like Internet Explorer or Netscape. Right now for example, the page you've got on your screen is stored on a host in USA, requested by the adress you typed in (http://"hostname"."domain"/directory/file) and displayed. It's like you open a document in a text processing program, for example, just with the difference that the text is not from your computer, but brought via the Internet to you. This is called also known as a "Client/Server" system. If you publish a page in the World Wide Web, you ergo need to find a host for it, unless you can afford to run day and night a specially dedicated computer system that enabled users all over the world to view your page. Of course, not everyone can do so, so there are services available which rent webspace to their customers. After having created your page, White Star Web Innovations organizes for you the suitable webspace and loads your page up. Of course, you can also establish your own server system, or load it up on your own.
But what is a WWW page? A WWW page is a plain vanilla text file, which stores information about pictures, their positions, the text, and it's displaying parameters -- all information your computer retrieving the information needs to display it correctly -- and all this then is called HTML (HyperTextMarkupLanguage).
